The Hand-Painted Traditions of Andhra Pradesh: Beyond Kalamkari

If you mention hand-painted sarees from Andhra Pradesh, most people immediately think of Kalamkari. That's fair — it's the most internationally recognised tradition from the state.

But Andhra Pradesh has a richer textile tradition than Kalamkari alone.

Kalamkari: The Foundation

Two forms, as covered in detail in earlier posts.

Srikalahasti style: Fully freehand, religious subject matter, pen-drawn lines throughout.

Machilipatnam style: Block printing as a base with hand-painting over it, denser patterns, historically export-oriented.

Both hold GI tags. Both use natural dyes in authentic production.

Mangalagiri: The Woven Tradition

Mangalagiri (Guntur district) is known for handwoven cotton textiles with distinctive striped and checked patterns produced by a specific weaving technique.

These are not hand-painted, but they're significant to any discussion of Andhra textile tradition — a parallel handcraft tradition of equal depth. They also hold a GI tag, produced by weaver communities who have practised the craft for generations.

Uppada Silk: The Jamdani of Andhra

Uppada (East Godavari district) produces a specific type of silk saree using the jamdani weaving technique — patterns woven directly into the fabric using extra weft threads, producing designs that appear to float on the surface.

Uppada jamdani sarees are among the lightest and most delicate of Indian silk sarees. The level of hand skill involved is comparable to fine hand-painting traditions. Uppada silk holds a GI tag.

The Broader Picture

Andhra Pradesh's textile traditions reflect the cultural complexity of the region — different communities with different histories, different connections to trade routes and royal courts.

Kalamkari travels best internationally because it's visually striking and its narrative content is accessible to non-Indian buyers. But it's one tradition among several, each with its own depth and its own community of practitioners.
