How to Care for
Hand-Painted Sarees

Washing · Storage · Maintenance  ·  April 2026  ·  By Hand Painted Saree Atelier

Hand-painted sarees are among the most delicate and valuable garments in any wardrobe. Unlike printed or embroidered sarees, the colours and artwork are applied directly onto the fabric using fabric-safe dyes and paints — which means they need special care to stay vibrant and last for years.

Whether you are a boutique owner advising your customers, or someone who has just received a hand-painted saree, this guide covers everything you need to know.

1. Washing a Hand-Painted Saree

The golden rule: always hand wash. Machine washing — even on a gentle cycle — creates friction and agitation that can lift or crack the paint over time.

How to hand wash:

  1. Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water (never hot)
  2. Add a small amount of mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo
  3. Turn the saree inside out before submerging
  4. Gently swish the saree in the water — do not scrub, rub, or twist
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean cold water until no soap remains
  6. Do not wring — gently press out excess water with your hands

First wash tip: Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to the final rinse water. This helps set the colours and prevents any initial bleeding — a trick we recommend to all our wholesale buyers to pass on to their customers.

Dry cleaning is also safe and a good option if you are unsure. Always inform your dry cleaner that the saree is hand-painted so they use appropriate solvents.

2. Drying

3. Ironing

4. Storage

Proper storage is just as important as how you wash the saree.

5. Quick Do's and Don'ts

✓ Do

  • Hand wash in cold water
  • Wash inside out
  • Add vinegar to first rinse
  • Dry in shade
  • Iron on reverse side
  • Store in muslin cloth
  • Use mild or baby shampoo

✗ Don't

  • Machine wash
  • Tumble dry
  • Dry in direct sunlight
  • Use bleach or harsh detergents
  • Iron directly on painted side
  • Store in plastic bags
  • Wring or twist the fabric

How Long Will the Colours Last?

With proper care, the hand-painted colours on our sarees can last 10–20 years without significant fading. The fabric dyes we use at our Surat atelier are specifically formulated for textile use and are colourfast after the first wash.

The most common reason colours fade early is washing in hot water or drying in direct sunlight — both of which are easy to avoid once you know.

A Note for Boutique Owners

If you stock our sarees in your boutique, we recommend including a small care card with every saree you sell. It adds a premium feel to the unboxing experience and significantly reduces customer complaints about colour changes after washing.

We can provide you with a ready-made care card template — just ask us on WhatsApp and we'll send it over.
