How to Iron a Hand-Painted Saree Without Damaging the Design

May 2026 · By Hand Painted Saree Atelier

Most hand-painted saree damage from ironing comes from one specific mistake: the iron touching the painted surface directly.

Natural dyes and pigments sit on the surface of fabric fibres rather than bonding deep within them. Direct heat from an iron against painted areas can cause pigment to flake, crack, or transfer onto the soleplate.

The fix is simple: you just need to know it.

The Core Rule

Never iron a hand-painted saree with the iron directly touching the painted surface.

Always iron from the reverse side, or use a pressing cloth (a thin plain cotton cloth placed between the iron and the saree) on the painted side.

That's most of it.

Temperature Settings

Cotton hand-painted sarees: Medium heat from the reverse side. If ironing the front, use a pressing cloth and medium-low heat.

Silk hand-painted sarees: Low heat (silk/delicate setting). Silk scorches at temperatures cotton handles easily.

Tussar silk: Low-to-medium heat only.

Never use steam directly on painted areas. Steam can cause some natural dyes to bleed or spread. If using steam, do it on the reverse side only.

Step by Step

  1. Ensure the saree is completely dry. Even slight dampness can cause colour transfer.
  2. Lay it on the ironing board painted-side down.
  3. Iron in smooth, continuous strokes. Don't leave the iron stationary.
  4. For the pallu: iron the reverse side first. If the front still has creases, place a clean dry cotton cloth over it and iron over the cloth on low heat.
  5. Fold and hang immediately after ironing.

For Deep, Set-In Creases

Dampen the reverse side of the crease lightly with a spray bottle. Wait 30 seconds. Iron on medium heat. The moisture softens fibres and allows the crease to release. Never spray water directly on the painted front.
