How to Store Silk Sarees Properly (So They Last Decades)

May 2026 · By Hand Painted Saree Atelier

A silk saree stored correctly will outlast you.

This is not an exaggeration. Museum collections contain silk textiles hundreds of years old. The fabric is extraordinarily durable. What damages it is usually how it's kept.

Use Cotton, Not Plastic

Silk sarees should be stored wrapped in cotton — unbleached cotton muslin or a cotton pillowcase. Not plastic bags, not airtight containers.

Silk is a protein fibre that needs to breathe. Sealed in plastic, moisture gets trapped against the fabric, leading to yellowing and mildew over time.

Fold Differently Each Time

Folding a saree in the same way every time weakens the fabric along those fold lines and eventually causes it to break there.

Change the folding direction slightly each time — thirds one time, quarters the next, a loose roll another. The goal is to distribute stress rather than concentrate it.

For very delicate silk, rolling loosely around a cotton-wrapped cardboard tube is better than folding at all.

Skip the Mothballs

Naphthalene mothballs damage silk fibres over time and leave a persistent smell that's nearly impossible to remove.

Better alternatives: dried neem leaves, a few cloves wrapped in cotton, or cedar blocks. All repel insects without harming fabric. Replace neem and cloves every few months as they lose potency.

Zari Sarees Need Extra Care

The metallic zari sections should not press directly against the silk body for long periods — zari reacts with the natural oils in silk, causing discolouration. Store with the zari facing outward or separated by a thin cotton layer.

Where to Keep Them

A cool, dry, dark place. A wooden almirah is ideal — wood regulates humidity in a way pressed-board furniture doesn't. Keep away from windows, away from the bottom of piles, away from the floor in monsoon season.

Check Every Few Months

Take stored sarees out every 3–64 months. Air them in shade for an hour. Refold in a different direction. This prevents set-in creases, lets you spot insect damage early, and releases trapped moisture.

It takes twenty minutes. It's the most useful thing you can do for long-term preservation.
