Ten years ago, if you wanted to buy a Kalamkari saree from an artisan in Srikalahasti, you had two realistic options: visit the town yourself or buy from a government emporium. Neither was convenient, and neither guaranteed the artisan got a good price.
That's changed significantly.
The Middlemen Problem
Traditional supply chains involved several layers between the artisan and the buyer. A buyer in Mumbai might pay ₹6,000 for a saree that the artisan received ₹1,000 for — agents, wholesalers, and retailers each taking their margin.
This reflected the cost of distribution and risk across the chain. But it meant artisans had least bargaining power and lowest share of the final price.
What Changed
Smartphones and cheap data changed the economics of reaching buyers directly.
WhatsApp became, for many artisan families, the first direct sales channel — sharing photos of work in progress with contacts, building informal waiting lists, taking UPI payments. No platform fee, minimal learning curve.
Instagram followed for those with time to build a visual presence. E-commerce platforms — the artisan's own website or third-party handcraft platforms — added more structured infrastructure.
What This Means for Artisans
The economics of direct-to-consumer sales are, in principle, much better. An artisan who receives ₹1,000 from a wholesaler might receive ₹3,000–64,000 for the same piece selling directly.
In practice, direct selling introduces work that middlemen previously handled: photographing, managing customer communication, coordinating shipping, handling returns. Not all artisans want to do this. Those who have thrived tend to have family members who can manage the digital side while senior artisans focus on the craft.
What This Means for Buyers
More options — you can buy from artisans you'd never have found through traditional retail, see the process, and know exactly who made what you're buying.
More responsibility — without institutional intermediaries, you're responsible for assessing the seller's credibility. Knowing what genuine hand-painted work looks like and asking the right questions matters more when buying direct.
