Over 20 master painters. A tradition rooted in decades of practice. Each saree that leaves our atelier is the result of hours of focused work — brush, pigment, silk, and breath.
The Hand Painted Saree atelier was founded in Surat in 2002 — in a single room with three painters and a vision: to make hand-painted sarees accessible to buyers worldwide, without compromising on the integrity of the craft.
Today, we work with over twenty master painters, most of whom have been with us for more than five years. Some learned from their mothers. We train new artists every year, ensuring the tradition is passed down.
We don't use digital printing to supplement hand-painting. Every stroke on every saree is made by a human hand, with a physical brush, on physical fabric. That is our only method — and it always will be.
Hand-painting is not a shortcut. It takes longer, costs more to produce, and demands far more skill than any printed alternative. We believe that is exactly what makes it worth it — for you and for the woman who wears it.
Every hand-painted saree passes through six distinct stages in our atelier, each requiring its own expertise.
The saree is washed, dried, and stretched taut on a purpose-built frame. Any texture irregularities are removed. The fabric must be perfectly smooth and taut before a single brushstroke is placed.
The design is lightly traced or free-handed directly onto the fabric using a washable pencil or water-soluble pen. For complex designs, reference sheets are pinned behind the frame for accuracy.
The painter begins with the lightest colours, working from background to foreground. The base pigment is mixed fresh daily from professional-grade textile dyes to ensure colour consistency across pieces.
This is the most skilled stage. Fine brushes (often single-hair) are used to add shadows, gradients, fine lines, and the minute details that distinguish hand-painted work from any printed alternative.
Painted sarees are heat-fixed using a professional iron and steam process that bonds the pigment molecules into the fabric fibres. This ensures the colours remain vibrant through washing and wearing.
A senior painter inspects every piece under strong light before it moves to packing. Any touch-ups are done at this stage. Only sarees that pass inspection are packed and shipped.

We are particular about our materials. Every pigment, every brush, every fabric is chosen for how it performs under the hand of our artists.
Professional-grade, non-toxic textile pigments. Colour-fast, vibrant, and washable. Mixed fresh for every production batch.
Squirrel hair and synthetic fine-point brushes ranging from broad wash brushes to single-hair detail tools.
Steam and heat-based fixing agents that permanently bond pigment to fabric fibres without altering the fabric's hand feel.
We source from trusted mills in Surat and Varanasi — or work with your supplied fabric. Every fabric is pre-tested for paint absorption.
